Hi Mrs Cooper,
I think that (apart from the fact that these are more years eg. 1840 than dates eg. 6th of February 1840) what happened in history on these 'dates' was everything that happened before those dates eg. if I was at school in late Februrary/March 1840, the treaty would have been current events, not history/like Cpt. Cook's landing would have been in 1840.
So, in 1770 the history was Maori arrival and Abel Tasman and current events would be Captain Cook's arrival.
In the 1800's history was the mapping of New Zealand by Cook and pre-European times.
In 1848 the Treaty was history.
In 1860/1861 the Otago Association establishment at Dunedin getting built would have been history.
Now all of those things, the arrival of Cook, the Treaty being signed, The settlement being established at Dunedin, and the Otago Gold Rush are history!
However, if you take the word History out of the mix, the question would have a change in meaning, where you could clearly state the significant events that happened in those years,
I hope you have got my drift!
